Julia welcomes weaving enthusiasts to her workshop to learn hand weaving and insodoing help keep this ancient craft alive. She offers traditional weaving workshops yet also encourages students to experiment with their own designs.

The current weaving workshop consists of:

  • An introduction to the Cypriot traditional loom.

  • Learning the Phyti weaving technique, the most characteristic type of Cypriot weaving. Phyti woven textiles are known for their vibrant colours and geometrical shapes.

  • Familiarising the participants with the traditional Asproploumia technique. The Asproploumi weave is an open type lace weave achieved by twisting and interweaving threads. It is believed that the Asproploumia are related to old weavings originating from Eastern Mediterranean regions. 

  • A talk on the history of Cypriot weaving, during which archived samples are presented.

  • Guided tour in the showroom demonstrating the application of traditional weaving in contemporary textiles.

  • The weaving workshop runs for three days and costs a total of €180 (€80 to be payed upfront to secure a place). The dates are announced on our social media accounts.

  • One day private workshops are also available upon request.

Tutorials

In addition online tutorials are also available upon request on traditional Cypriot embroidery and lace, weaving and traditional garments. These include information on their history, social and economic importance, technique, raw materials and relations with those of neighbouring countries.
